Intuition
The osculating circle is the circle that best hugs the curve at a point: it matches the curve's position, direction, and bending. Its radius is the radius of curvatureR. A sharp turn means small R (large curvature κ); a nearly straight stretch means huge R.
Result / Method
For a plane curve r(t)=x(t)i^+y(t)j^:
κ=((x′)2+(y′)2)3/2∣x′y′′−y′x′′∣,R=κ1.
Steps: (1) compute x′,y′,x′′,y′′; (2) plug into the numerator (a 2×2 determinant of r′ and r′′) and denominator (speed cubed); (3) invert for R. For an explicit y=f(x) use R=(1+(y′)2)3/2/∣y′′∣.
Worked Example
For r(t)=sinhti^+coshtj^ at t=ln2: x′=cosht, y′=sinht, x′′=sinht, y′′=cosht. Numerator x′y′′−y′x′′=cosh2t−sinh2t=1. With sinh(ln2)=43,cosh(ln2)=45, speed2=(45)2+(43)2=817, so R=(817)3/2=321734≈3.10.
Pitfall: Don't confuse R with κ — the question almost always wants R=1/κ. Also simplify a3/2 carefully: 83/2=162, and any 2 you rationalize out of the denominator must reappear in the numerator (a common dropped factor in answer keys).

Curvature (parametric plane curve)
κ=((x′)2+(y′)2)3/2∣x′y′′−y′x′′∣
Curvature of r(t)=(x(t),y(t)); numerator is the cross-product magnitude of r' and r''.
Radius of curvature
R=κ1=∣x′y′′−y′x′′∣((x′)2+(y′)2)3/2
Radius of the osculating circle; reciprocal of curvature.
Explicit y=f(x) form
R=∣y′′∣(1+(y′)2)3/2
Special case when the curve is given as a graph y=f(x).
